Kojima Interview:
Hamamura(H):Firstly I'd like to ask. Are these images from the actual PlayStation3 machine?
Hideo Kojima(HK): Yes they are. They'll get even better for the gameshow.
H: I'm surprised by the quality. So we can actually play in the world we see here, right?
HK: These are demo screens, but that's what we plan to have. It's common sense that graphics and sound get better for the next generation. We made it our first goal to make something the gamers can see and understand. What we're working with now, is how we can put the true metal gear essence into the game such as colors and atmosphere.
H: Choices like that have probably widened now that you're working on PS3?
HK: But that's why we have to make decisions first. It's similar to the choice a high school graduate decides to major in, when they're headed to university.
H: And so that choice becomes the creator's nature.
HK: If you make simple choices, you end up with enhanced graphics and sound. But then, all games become the same. But like I've said before, this time we will create the things you cannot see.
H: Can you be a little more specific?
HK: I use the sentence "from relaism to natural" often. But for example in Metal Gear, when you're deteced by the enemy, the rule was to have a "!" mark appear above their head. But now we can express that without relying on ! marks. Such as facial expression, or gestures. Things that were expressed with symbols can now be shown by natural movement.
H: A world where the player can naturally sense what's happening before them.
HK: There is a bit more meaning to natural. The prior series were composed with a 2 dimensional setting like "Snake vs Enemy". This is actually very unnatural too. The relation of allies and foes change accordingly to the situation. As you probably understood from the images, the story now takes place on the battlefield. On the battlefield, numerous countries are fighting, and there may be different organizations within the same country. It's not a 2 dimensional situation of friend or foe. So let's say Country A and Country B are at war. Then Snake comes in and defeats a soldier from Country A. Suddenly Country A has become the enemy, and Country B may support you. Something like this.
H: Snake's actions change the situation.
HK: However, the main idea is a Stealth mission, so basically it's best to not be seen. What action you take to change and utilize the situation all depends on the player.
H: Which is truly something that can't be seen. What other features will we see?
HK: You'll also see the "psychological warfare" feature. Enemies until now have simply attacked the player. This is also very unnatural. The humans' concentration and movements change depending on their state of mind. Like, if you threaten them, their competence to fight may drop. I'd like to implement those kinds of strategies.
H:Very natural, yet a very deep strategy it seems. I think I'm starting to understand what you meant when you said "things you cannot see". Changing the subject, I must say I was surprised with Snake's face this time around...
HK: Metal Gear Solid 4 is for the people who like elders(laughs). As a game designer in his 40s, there's no way I'd go without doing this. I'll leave growth stories of young characters up to other people.
H: What about Raiden, the representative for young people?
HK: Raiden is very cool this time. You'll probably get to love him. Raiden will be showing up in the "Secret Theater" we'll be making public for the first time at the gameshow. The intro starts where the E3 trailer left off. After that, the MGS4 movie running on real hardware plays.
H: Movie from real hardware is definitely the biggest part of the show.
HK: This year, we'll have a Kojima Production stage, and have plenty of talk shows and movies of our sessions. It's like a big party for us, so we won't hold anything back. Not only children, fathers, grandpas, everybody come have a look. (laughs)
Other info:
What makes a large impact on viewers over the realistic world created by the PlayStation 3 is the man we see here. An aged face, and a body that barely matches. A sneaking suit obviously special, and a familiar looking bandana. This man is "Snake" without a doubt. Is this perhaps the aged Solid Snake? Or a different person?
A whole new CQC for Snake?
This is the close quarters combat stance we've also seen in MGS3. However, in the third installment, it was used mainly while holding a small firearm. So then this is what the CQC evolved to be?
Here you can see the old man facing a small mech also found in the illustration. Is it a partner-like existence? The mech's info is found on the next page.
Here, we will show pictures of the world taken from MGS4. First thing you'll sense, is that this is a war. The series had always taken place in a battle, but never in a war. In other words, you are not sneaking into enemy territory, but now you must sneak into a place where there are numerous organizations fighting.
How does this influence the game? And exactly who are the members of this war?
The mysterious mech is "Metal Gear Mark II". These are strictly speculations, but perhaps the camera on the top sends real time footage to Snake's eye gadget. Also, a mech with the same name appeared in "Snatcher".
Unusual two legged mechs walking in the town. The figure reminds us of Metal Gear Rex which showed up in MGS1. Perhaps a massively produced mech?
White coat, glasses, scruffy hair. A little aged, but most definitely this is Otacon!?
Ever since being rescued in MGS1, he's supported Solid Snake as a partner. If he's showing up in this game, that would mean that the old man is Solid Snake?
